Like Never Before by Melissa Tagg | My Review

Can you tell I so loved this book?
The latest installment of Melissa Tagg's Walker Family Series arrived on the 24th, and I finished it four days later. And this is only because of a bustling Easter weekend in between or it would have been finished sooner. A mark of a great book...
The two main characters, Logan and Amelia, were secondary characters in the first book and the in-between novella, From the Start and Three Little Words. But one great thing about Tagg's books? You should read the books in order, but you don't have to to fully understand what is going on. A fantastic semi-sequential, semi-standalone series, this second book drew me right back into perhaps one of my most beloved fictional towns: Maple Valley, Iowa. A Mid-West version of Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls or Mount Bedford from It's a Wonderful Life.
The novel opens just as spring is attempting to arrive in the Mid-West, and finds Logan Walker, the eldest of the Walker clan, burnt out and nearing his breaking point trying to juggle single fatherhood and a burgeoning political writing/campaign career in Los Angeles. When he receives a letter from an old mentor who viewed him like a son, his life turns upside down as he goes home for what he thinks will be a temporary stay. Back in Maple Valley, we find Amelia Bentley--a driven, passionate reporter for the town's newspaper with a Lorelai Gilmore-esque love for the town that embraced her three years earlier when her life fell apart. Seemingly random circumstances draw these two together--but, in reality, it's the Ultimate Author beginning their love story. Their love story together, and the Greatest Love that pulls their faith back up from the quaking, ash-filled depths of their aching hearts to renew and restore their faith.
One thing in this novel I was delighted to see was the small historical storyline that was interwoven as one of the "conflicts" needing solved that kept pushing Amelia and Logan together. Melissa has made no secret online for her great love for this particular fictional hero of hers--Logan Walker, and oh my word, I see why now. He is a steady, common-sense man with a huge heart and need to protect those he cares about that just left me sighing. Not to mention his appearance and quirks Melissa writes into the story makes him all the more swoon-worthy.
For fans of romantic comedies filled to the brim with so much heart set against the vivid backdrop of a Mid-Western Stars Hollow (with comedic and heartwarming characters abounding!), Like Never Before is a must-read.

"Another endearing, pithy story of finding love at the perfect time."
-Publishers Weekly
Maple Valley became Amelia Bentley's haven after her heart and her dreams of a family were shattered. But her new life as a newspaper editor is shaken when the small-town paper is in danger of closing. Her one hope: A lead on an intriguing story that just might impress the new publisher...if only she knew who he was.

After his biggest campaign success yet, widowed speechwriter Logan Walker now has the chance of a lifetime--a spot on a presidential campaign. But his plans are interrupted when he finds out he's inherited his hometown newspaper. He travels home intent on selling the paper and spending some much-needed time with his young daughter before making the leap into national politics.

But instead of a quick sale and peaceful break from his hectic career, Logan finds himself helping Amelia chase her story. She's scrappy, but wounded. He's dependable, but lost. They may butt heads more than expected, but a series of leads on Maple Valley's quirky unsolved mystery is just the start of the sparks that fly in the office and in their hearts.
Melissa Tagg is a former reporter, current nonprofit grant writer and total Iowa girl. She's also a multi-published novelist, writing romantic comedies in the banter-filled style of her favorite 1930s and 40s classic films. Her latest book, Like Never Before, was named by Publishers Weekly to their spring 2016 "Religion and Spirituality" Top 10 list. When she's not writing she can be found hanging out with the coolest family ever, watching old movies, and daydreaming about her next book. Melissa loves connecting with readers at and on Facebook and Instagram.
